IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dennis Allen
Sandberg
August 15, 1942 – April 24, 2025
Dennis Allen Sandberg, aged 82, passed away peacefully, with his family on April 23rd, 2025, at
home in Naples, Florida. He was born on August 15th, 1942, in Glen Lake, Minnesota to Eric and
Mary-Jane Sandberg. He grew up in Hopkins and attended Hamline University. He married the
love of his life Roberta Hanning on December 28th, 1964, in St. Paul, Minnesota. They joined
the United States Foreign Service and spent 35 years in Public Service, representing the United States across the globe. In Rwanda, South Africa, London, Cyprus, Zaire, Cameroon, Denmark (Deputy Chief of Mission) and Ireland as Deputy Chief of Mission under Jean Kennedy-Smith. With multiple posts in Washington D.C. including Director of the Operations Center.
Dennis and Roberta made every place they lived a joyous home, gathering, and keeping a large
group of wonderful friends wherever they went. His career was impactful and had many
achievements, too many and varied to list, nurturing the Peace Process in Ireland among
them. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing a Foreign Service National Credit Union in Kigali, his first posting, whereby the local employees got access to credit and financial services for the first time. Post retirement they moved to Naples, Florida and made another wonderful home for their family and friends to visit, and also dabbled in real estate.
Dennis was bombastic, brilliant, and funny, a true party animal and raconteur. The most
common stories we have heard from his family and friends are about his incredible generosity
and kindness. Every person we know in his life has a story of how he showed up and helped when they needed a hand. You could count on Dennis. Oh yes, and he was fun, everyone says that!
He is survived by his wife, Roberta, younger brother, William Sandberg, his children Kirsten and
Karin, his Sons-in-Law Sergio and Niels, his Grandchildren Nicholas and Elsa, their partners Gabi and Cole and so many in the Hanning Family we lost count of our blessings, and of course his Dear Friends, you know who you are. We are heartbroken with his passing.
There will be a Memorial at his home June 1st, 2025 from 4-6pm at 2250 Queens Way, Naples,
Florida 34112. Please send us a note with memories of him you would like to share, to this
