Obituary

Laurence "Larry" Seymour Dunning, aged 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 10, 2024, at his home in Naples, FL - formerly from Brielle, NJ (a lovely town on the Jersey Shore). Born on May 29, 1942, in Buffalo, NY, Larry led a life rich in service, accomplishment, and love. Larry was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Jacquelyn Wendell Dunning for 37 years, a loving father to his daughter Chelsea and son Jake, and a proud uncle to nephew Lee (and his wife, Michele) Duerr of Holland, NY and niece Joni Lyons (and her husband, Bob) of Sheridan, Wyoming. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Ann Wendell, sisters-in-law Eileen Robinson (and her husband, Charlie) and Elizabeth Bell (and her husband, George), brother-in-law Harry Wendell, and many more nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and even great-great nieces and nephews! Larry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Monmouth University in New Jersey and a Certification in Non-woven Fabrics from Clemson University. His career in the paper industry spanned many years, working for Erving Paper Mill based in Massachusetts and managing Erving Healthcare Co. in New Jersey before starting his own business, Jake Industries. However, his true passion was boating, a love he cultivated as a child living on the Metedeconk River in Brick, NJ. The last vessel the family loved was a beautiful 32-foot Monterey named "Artemus" which means 'safe and sound' in Greek. Larry was also an avid runner for much of his life and a voracious reader, finishing at least one science fiction or historical novel each week.  Larry's family and friends will always remember him as an honest, fun, and caring person who said what he meant and meant what he said. Larry was a social, active man whose dedication to his community was evident in his involvement with the Brielle School District, where he served on the Board of Education and founded The Brielle Education Foundation in 2000. This foundation is a non-profit organization that helps provide enriching educational opportunities and enhancements to Brielle Elementary School students, leaving a legacy. A proud veteran, Larry served in the United States Navy from January 15, 1953, to January 14, 1969, stationed in Japan and on the USS Midway and received the Distinguished Service Medal. To honor Larry's memory, a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Fratello's Restaurant in Sea Girt, NJ on September 28, 2024, at 1pm. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate a life well-lived and to share their memories of Larry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity near and dear to Larry's heart, in his full name. Any other condolences may be sent to the Sunset Funeral Chapel 7795 Davis Blvd., Unit 204, Naples, FL 34104.
